Gas Fireplace Repair & Service
in Vancouver WA

A gas fireplace should light on the first try, burn with a steady flame and keep your glass clear. When it doesn't, Tri-Tech Heating, Inc. can help. We maintain and repair all makes and models of gas fireplaces, and we specialize in Heat & Glo. We're a local, family-owned business that has served Vancouver since 1993.

Need fireplace service? Call (360) 891-2002, Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm. After hours, call the same number to reach our answering service.

Smell gas? Stop and leave first

If you smell gas (a rotten-egg or sulfur odor), don't try to light or troubleshoot the fireplace. Leave the house right away without using switches or phones inside. Once you're outside, call 911 and NW Natural's 24-hour emergency line at 800-882-3377. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.

Common gas fireplace problems we repair

  • The pilot won't light or won't stay lit. Often a dirty or failing thermocouple or thermopile, a clogged pilot assembly or an ignition problem.
  • The gas fireplace won't turn on from the wall switch or remote. Sometimes it's just the remote or receiver batteries, and sometimes it's a switch, wiring, valve or control board.
  • The flame is weak, uneven, yellow or sooty. Usually a clogged burner, misplaced logs or an air-supply problem. It needs attention, since poor combustion can create soot and carbon monoxide.
  • Hazy or white film on the glass. A normal byproduct of burning gas that builds up over time. It needs the right cleaner, and heavy buildup can point to a burner that needs adjusting.
  • Strange noises or smells. Rumbling, whistling, clicking that doesn't stop, or odors beyond the brief "new season" smell on the first burn.
  • Blower or fan problems. A noisy fan, or a fan that won't run.
  • Electric fireplace problems. No heat output, a tripping circuit breaker, or a noisy heater.

Annual gas fireplace service and maintenance

A gas fireplace needs a yearly check, just like a furnace. Annual service catches worn parts and blocked vents before they turn into a no-heat call in December. A typical service visit includes:

  • Inspecting and cleaning the burner, pilot assembly and ports
  • Checking the ignition system, gas valve and connections
  • Testing the thermocouple or thermopile
  • Checking log placement and flame appearance
  • Inspecting the venting and termination outside
  • Cleaning the glass and checking the gasket and seal
  • Testing the remote, wall switch and blower
  • Confirming carbon monoxide alarms are working

Early fall, before you start using the fireplace, is the best time to schedule it. See our seasonal HVAC maintenance checklist for the rest of your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my gas fireplace pilot light stay lit?

The most common cause is a dirty or worn thermocouple or thermopile, the sensor that tells the gas valve the pilot is burning. A clogged pilot tube or a draft can also blow it out. If relighting doesn't hold, it needs service.

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in early fall before you start using it regularly.

Can you repair a fireplace brand you didn't install?

Yes. We maintain and repair all makes and models of gas fireplaces, and we specialize in Heat & Glo.
