People compare mini splits and heat pumps as if they were two different machines. They aren't. Sorting that out first makes the rest of the decision much easier.

Short answer: A mini split is a heat pump. The real choice is between a ductless heat pump (a mini split) and a ducted, or central, heat pump. If your home has ductwork in good condition, a ducted heat pump is usually the better fit. If it has no ducts, or you need to fix one room or an addition, a mini split usually is.

Heat pump vs. mini split: a mini split is a heat pump

Both systems move heat instead of making it, and both heat in winter and cool in summer. Our guide to how heat pumps work covers the details. The difference is how the heated or cooled air gets into your rooms.

  • Ducted (central) heat pump. An outdoor unit connects to an indoor air handler, and the air travels through ductwork to vents in each room.
  • Mini split (ductless heat pump). An outdoor unit connects by refrigerant lines to one or more indoor units mounted in the rooms they serve. There is no ductwork.

Mini split vs. ducted heat pump at a glance

Mini split (ductless heat pump) Ducted heat pump
Ductwork Not needed Required
Zoning Each indoor unit has its own temperature setting One thermostat for the whole house unless zoning is added
What you see A visible indoor unit in each room it serves Hidden apart from the vents
Installation A small opening in the wall for the refrigerant lines Simple when good ducts are already there, a bigger job when they aren't
Cost A single zone is often the lower-cost way to heat and cool one area Several mini split zones can cost as much as a ducted system, or more
Best for Homes without ducts, additions and problem rooms Homes with ductwork in good condition

What we see in Vancouver homes

Many older Vancouver homes are heated with baseboard or wall heaters and have no ductwork at all. For those homes a mini split is usually the answer: there are no ducts to build and no ceilings to open up, and it adds air conditioning. ENERGY STAR says certified mini splits use up to 60% less energy than standard home electric radiators.

The other call we get most is the room the ducts never served well: a bonus room over the garage, a converted garage, or the upstairs bedroom that is always too hot in summer. A single-zone mini split fixes that room without replacing a working furnace.

Tri-Tech Heating, Inc. is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Elite Contractor and has served Vancouver since 1993. We run a load calculation for every room before we recommend a system.

When a mini split makes more sense

  • Your home has no ductwork, such as one heated by baseboards or wall heaters
  • You are adding heating and cooling to an addition, bonus room or converted garage
  • One room is always too hot or too cold
  • You want different temperatures in different rooms

When a ducted heat pump makes more sense

  • Your home already has ductwork in good condition
  • You are replacing a furnace, an air conditioner or both
  • You want the system out of sight
  • You are heating and cooling many rooms at once

If the ducts leak or are undersized, they need attention first. See ductwork, and learn more about heat pump installation in Vancouver WA.

You can have both

It isn't always one or the other. Many homes use a ducted heat pump for the main living space and a mini split for the room the ducts never served well, such as a bonus room over the garage.

How they handle a Vancouver winter

Our mild, damp winters suit heat pumps of both kinds, and cold-climate models keep producing useful heat well below freezing. A ducted heat pump is usually paired with backup heat for the coldest days, either electric or a gas furnace. Our heat pump vs. furnace guide covers that choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a mini split the same as a heat pump?

A mini split is one type of heat pump. It works the same way as a ducted heat pump, but it delivers air through indoor units mounted in each room instead of through ductwork.

Is a mini split cheaper than a ducted heat pump?

A single-zone mini split is often the lower-cost way to heat and cool one area. A multi-zone system with several indoor units can cost as much as a ducted heat pump, or more. It depends on your home, which is what the site visit establishes.

Can a mini split heat a whole house?

Yes, with enough indoor units placed where the home needs them. Homes that already have good ductwork are usually better served by a ducted heat pump.

Do mini splits work in cold weather?

Yes. Cold-climate models keep producing useful heat well below freezing, which covers a typical Vancouver winter.
