What we see most often
- No heat at all. Often a failed igniter, a tripped limit switch, or a thermostat that has lost its settings. Check your breaker and thermostat batteries before you call. Sometimes that is the whole problem.
- Short cycling. The furnace starts, runs briefly, and shuts off. Usually it's airflow: a clogged filter, a blocked return, or a closed-off vent.
- A noise that is new. Grinding, squealing, or a bang on startup. A bang at ignition is worth a same-day call, not one that waits until next week.
- Heat, but not enough of it. Duct leakage, an undersized system, or a furnace that is simply at the end of its life.
- The furnace runs, but the bill climbed. Efficiency falls off long before a furnace fails outright.
If you smell gas
Leave the building now. Don't touch light switches or use your phone while you're inside. Once you're outside, call 911 or NW Natural's 24-hour emergency line at 800-882-3377. Don't go back in until the fire department or the gas company tells you it is safe. Then call us, and we'll get your furnace checked and back in service.

We'll tell you honestly which one you're looking at. A furnace under ten years old with a failed part is almost always worth repairing. Past fifteen years, with a major component gone, replacement usually makes more sense, and we'll walk you through the costs of both before you decide. How a furnace repair visit runs
- What you tell us. No heat, not enough heat, short cycling, odd noise, or a code on the board — that shapes what the technician brings.
- Diagnosis on site. We test rather than guess. Ignition, flame sensing, gas valve, pressure switch, inducer, limit, blower and the thermostat all produce similar symptoms from the outside.
- What we found, before we fix it. You get told what failed and what it takes to put right before any work starts.
- Repair and verify. The furnace is run through a full heat cycle after the repair to confirm it holds.
What to check before you call
Four things are worth ruling out yourself, and all four are free:
- Thermostat batteries, and that it is set to Heat with the setpoint above room temperature
- The breaker for the furnace, and the switch on or beside the unit that looks like a light switch
- A clogged filter — a badly blocked one will trip the furnace on high limit
- Supply and return vents that have been closed or blocked by furniture
Past that, stop. Do not open the burner compartment, bypass a safety switch or relight anything you are unsure about.
Noises, and what they usually mean
General guidance, not a diagnosis — a technician still has to see it.
- Boom or whoomph on start-up. Delayed ignition. Worth treating as urgent.
- Repeated clicking with no ignition. Usually the igniter or flame sensing circuit.
- Screech or squeal. Commonly the blower motor or its bearings.
- Rattle from the ductwork. Often a duct issue rather than the furnace itself.
- Running, then stopping, then running again. Short cycling — airflow, a failing limit switch, or an oversized unit.

Furnace repair questions we get
Do you charge for an estimate on a repair?
Free estimates are on new equipment and installations. A repair means a technician has to come out and diagnose it, which is a service call rather than a free estimate. We would rather say that up front than at your door.
Do you work on brands you did not install?
Yes. We are a York certified dealer, Mitsubishi Electric dealer and American Standard certified, and we service other makes as well. If you are unsure about yours, call and ask.
How long does a furnace last?
It depends on the unit and how it has been maintained, so anyone quoting you a single number is guessing. What matters more is the pattern: repeated failures in one season, a cracked heat exchanger, or parts that are no longer available all move the conversation toward replacement.
Can you come out after hours?
Emergency service is answered 24/7 on the same number. No heat in January counts.
Is it worth repairing an older furnace?
Sometimes clearly yes, sometimes clearly no, and often it is a judgement call about how much life is left against what a replacement would cost and save. We will give you the honest version, including when the honest version is that a repair buys you another winter.
