Winter Months May be Harder on Indoor Air Quality

While this interview with Tim Buckley, PhD, MHS on Indoor Air Pollution in Winter is from 2005, we found that the information is even more relevant today.

Indoor air quality in the winter months can be reduced even more than the summer because we tend to “seal out the cold” and crank up the heat. If you have animals in the home or have not properly serviced  your heating unit, this will insure lower indoor air quality. While you can purchase portable air cleaners, you will have to purchase enough for the entire house. to combat winter air quality decline. If there are smokers in the home, even if they always go outside to smoke, you will probably experience an increase in exposure because it is human nature to return indoors faster in the cold weather!

We recommend that you consult with an indoor air quality professional to determine what other things you can do.

Once you have a full understanding of the condition your home is in now you can move forward with some of the recommendations for improving your indoor air quality we wrote about here: http://tri-techheating.com/good-air-good-health/.

Furnace Servicing Saves Money and Increases Comfort

There are many months out of the year that we choose to just forget we have a furnace. Then the rains come, the clouds hang around and the reality of a less than efficient furnace starts to hit our pocket books.

Furnace servicing ensures that your furnace is running as efficiently as possible. Regular furnace servicing also helps prolong the life of your furnace. These benefits of regular furnace service are both likely to impact your fiscal comfort as well as your physical comfort.

A dirty filter or improperly functioning motor can increase your bill and decrease your comfort. Even worse, an undetected crack can allow dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your home!

Things that a professional furnace repair company will check for are:

  • Check thermostat operations
  • Test all safety controls and limits
  • Inspect and tighten all electrical loads
  • Measure amps and volts of electrical loads
  • Calculate CFM of air at indoor unit
  • Monitor gas pressure valve
  • Inspect heat exchanger for stress cracks
  • Inspect burner assembly
  • Measure temperature differences at indoor unit
  • Clean the coil
  • Clean the drain line
  • Change the filters (in general the customer is expected to provide the filters due to the many options available

A professional will advise you of any issues they find during a standard service call and make recommendations for moving forward if repairs or replacements are on the horizon. Having regular service calls helps prevent emergency repair costs during the dead of winter when our furnace is taxed heavily and our heating bills are high enough!

Poor Indoor Air Quality can be tied to symptoms like:

  • Headaches

  • Test your air for particulates and contamination
  • Determine potential air quality hazards

Indoor Air Quality Solutions:

  • Filtration: Installing a filter that will remove all of the particulates in the air even the ones that you can not see.
  • Ventilate: Installing a unit that removes the stale air and brings in fresh oxygen to breath in order to help you breath easier, reduce sickness, improve sleep and reduce mildew and mold.
  • Microbial Reduction: Installation of a Photohydroionization Probe to control and render harmless Yeast, Molds and Viruses.
  • Low Wall Return: Installation of a low wall return to stop the dust from hitting the lungs by removing the dust before you breath it.
